Belvederes – The Eyes Of Vinodol

The entire Vinodol is a beautiful story, composed of rich history, numerous cultural and historical monuments, natural resources and tradition. It is one thing to experience Vinodol by passing through it, and quite another to see it from the “bird’s-eye view”.A new, distinctive tourist product was created by building six (6) belvederes in the District of Vinodol and the Town of Novi Vinodolski. In this way, Novi Vinodolski Tourist Board and District of Vinodol Tourist Board supplemented the tourist offer of this destination, which has become more and more oriented towards active (day-trip) tourism.Six locations for belvederes were selected, out of which three (3) are located in the District of Vinodol:overlooking Drivenik – Mahavica Belvedere, overlooking Grižane/Tribalj – Pridva Belvedere, overlooking Bribir - Slipica Belvedere, and three (3) are located in the Town of Novi Vinodolski:overlooking Ledenice – Gradina Belvedere,at the foot of Sviba – Sviba Belvedere, and by Krmpote – Kuk Belvedere.

In the area of the former Vinodol principality, the princes Frankopan had built nine castles, and their representatives were signatories of the Vinodol Codex from 1288. In today's Vinodol area, there are still three of the nine existing castles – in Bribir, Grižane, and Drivenik, and another one, dating back to ancient times – Badanj. Badanj was erected on the foundations of an ancient fort and it towered above the valley spreading over the very heart of Vinodol towards the sea. The castle of Drivenik is the most preserved and the most attractive castle of Vinodol, which is, along with St. Dujam's and St. Stephen's Church, situated on the hill overlooking the Tribalj Lake. The castle of Grižane was built on the rocky cliffs, which the locals like to call «griže», after which the castle was named. Only the remnants of the walls of the castle of Grižane are reminders of its glorious past today. Out of what used to be the castle of Bribir, only the quadrangular tower and a part of the town wall from 1302 were preserved, because the people of Bribir in the 19th century built a school and the town hall where the former castle was located.

  • Rose of Vinodol

The Rose of Vinodol is a contemporary tourist attraction based on the story from Vinodol's past. Out of 12 candidates, the best Rose of Vinodol is selected each year, based on the skills she had shown in nine games relating to grapes and vine. The overture of contemporary ecological or hand-made products is inspired by fairs of the period. Games, music and dancing which take place during these couple of days of the pageant are modeled after ancient forms of entertainment, which relied on traditional instruments, singing voices and personal creativity.

St. George and St. Barbara were coming out of the woods; Barbara was walking and George was riding. When they reached the peak of the Upper side, suddenly they saw a big valley (Vinodol). St. George’s horse leaped to the lower side, which was pointing to the sea. On solid rock you can still see the traces of the hoof, saber and foot. St. Barbara walked on foot and could not leap over the valley, so she came down to a village called Podskoči and took a stride over the valley. In Podskoči you can still see the imprints of her shoe and spindle. On the place where St. George landed with his horse the people of Bribir built St. George’s Church, and on the place where St. Barbara set her foot they erected St. Barbara’s Chapel.

According to a folk’s tale, once upon a time Vinodol was invaded by the Turks who attacked the castle of Vinodol, which was safeguarding women, old people, children and a few members of garrison. Most of the garrison went to defend Ledenice. Women defended themselves so well that they managed to repulse the Turkish attack. Consequently, the Turks started making preparations to leave. When they saw that, the women started mocking the Turks who then realized they had been defeated by women. They got mad, attacked again and won Drivenik.

In the area around Grižane there are numerous natural recesses. Some of them are called Malik’s Holes. Our elders believed that such recesses were inhabited by Maliks, little people dressed in red clothes and wearing small red caps.
